DYC Therapeutic Yoga Instructors

Shelagh McElroy began her practice in 1996 to help alleviate career stress, and began teaching yoga full time in 2001. With a degree in psychology, she brings fun, acceptance, and a down-to-earth, humorous approach to her classes. She tailors her teaching approach in a way that both supports and challenges students. Shelagh is a self-confessed anatomy geek and done extensive studies in Yoga for Scoliosis with Elise Browning-Miller, and international studies in yoga and anatomy with Gary Carter in London, and Peter Blackaby in Windsor, England and Toronto, Canada.
Cheryl King began practicing yoga and meditation while studying World Religions in college. Upon graduation she traveled to Thailand seeking cultural immersion in the epicenter of Theravada Buddhism. Self-exploration took a backseat to career and family over the next two decades, but a health crisis brought her to a state of utter depletion by age 43. One Friday night in 2007, desperate for help, she tried Chris Green’s Restorative yoga class at DYC seeking relief, and she found it. The Dallas Yoga Center provided the solace and support, the hope and strength to sustain her through this next phase of her life’s journey.

In time, yoga and meditation infused all aspects of her life, and eventually led to a career change—after twenty years of teaching British Literature, she retired from academia and currently teaches yoga and meditation full time.

Cheryl brings an interdisciplinary approach to her students, combining mindfulness and movement to restore body / mind unity, invite self-discovery, and deepen self-compassion.

Drawing inspiration from mentors as diverse as Julliard dance instructor Irene Dowd and MBSR pioneer Jon Kabat Zinn, Cheryl’s approach includes utilizing breath, imagination, and curiosity to encourage a moment-to-moment experience of connection to self and others. Through anatomical alignment and mindful movement, her yoga and meditation practice promotes a radiantly healthy body-mind-spirit.

Kachina integrates a richly blended approach into her teaching style from the deeply rooted influences of multiple Somatic movement systems. Within the structure of her classes she encourages curiosity & brings versatility.

Kachina Abeita is a Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner®. The Somatic door was swung wide open when she first attended a workshop with Moshe Feldenkrais in Dallas,TX in 1982. That meeting launched a full career of exploring movement to expand awareness, brain function & sense of self. She trained in the Feldenkrais Method of Somatic Education Professional Training® from 1984-1987 and completed Bones for Life Level 1 with Ruthy Alon in 2005.
She has maintained a steady practice of Feldenkrais Functional Integration® from 1988 to the present. She offers private lessons at the Dallas Yoga Wellness Center and is teaching Awareness Through Movement® again at DYC.

Kachina also embraced Iyengar Yoga in 1982, studying with George Purvis and many of the Iyengar Senior level teachers. She taught along side and later partnered with Fred Dowd to establish the Dallas Yoga Center. She attended teacher trainings with Ramanan Patel and Tias Little and most recently, the BMC Foundations in Embodied Anatomy course here at DYC.

When deeply called to explore a spiritual path Kachina was lead to travel regularly to Kerala in South India, where she studied Advaita Vedanta for over 25yrs, which indelibly shaped her perception of life.

An additional influence is from the study of martial arts with Grand Master Lee of Lee’s White Leopard School of Kung Fu and Tai Chi. Under his tutelage Kachina learned the profoundly grounding & empowering practices of Wu Style Tai Chi, Chi Gong & Bawgua.
