Staying Grounded in Flight–Travel Tips for Alignment

Nothing throws me off my groove like traveling. Much as I love it, the change in routine and limited options can really wreck my flow. A two day trip can take up to a week to recover from…and then I’m off again!

How do you stay aligned when your routine is constantly  shifting?

Many of us have the opportunity/luxury/obligation of traveling for work and pleasure so I thought I would share some of the practices I have cultivated to making traveling more sustainable.

Food: Snacks are essential to my well being when I travel. They keep me energized while I’m on the go and they also help me stay balanced even when restaurant and food options are limited. If I can keep my appetite balanced, I am less likely to get caught off guard by hunger and eat outside of my practices.

  • Powdered, plant based protein shake: Great to add to a shaker bottle and the powder is safe to carry through security. Add water after you go through the screening.
  • Individual nut butter packets: little calorie boost for emergency situations
  • Agave sweetened, raw nutrition bars: a typical on-the-go snack but avoids refined sugars
  • Fruit and veggie leathers: delicious, full of fiber to keep you regular and makes you feel like a kid again in the midst of all the serious faces at the airport

Sleep: Whether you have to get up killer early for a flight or you are sleeping in unfamiliar places, it helps to have a ritual for bed time to cue your body that it’s time to calm down.

  • Pzizz: an app that creates permutations of sleep sounds and ambient music to help you tune out the noise. You can set time and volume to suit your preference and works both for naps and nighttime.
  • Sleepphones: Who wants to sleep with earbuds in their ears? This is a fleece headband with inserted speakers that can be adjusted to your head and are cozy for your delicate ears.
  • Magnesium: Nature’s relaxant! Make sure you find a pure brand with good quality supplements. Take recommend dose every night before bed and feel the magic happen.

Stimulation: The most difficult moment for me while traveling is sitting at the gate 20 minutes before boarding while the TV’s are blaring. It is usually impossible to find a corner where the speakers are not invading, so you have to be clever.

  • Meditation podcasts: I like to have a few from a favorite teacher always downloaded. Even if I do not immerse fully into the meditation, it helps to have some calming to remind me to draw my attention inward.

It is great to live in a connected and global world, but if I let it shift the ground from under me, then I am not bringing a richness of connection to the world I encounter.

What other challenges do you face when you travel? What tips can  you share that help you stay grounded?
