Over 1,000 Yogis Perform Sun Salutations for World Peace (video)

Can you imagine 70,000 people from around the world gathered together for a collective meditation for peace? Well earlier this week at an event called the World Culture Festival in Berlin, Germany, that’s exactly what happened.

The event brought together visitors from over 150 different countries “to celebrate their culture, food, dance, music and belief for a united world full of tolerance, love and peace.” Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, who led a mass meditation session at the festival, said the it was an opportunity…

“…for one to see that they are a global citizen and part of a global family. It is where each one can celebrate the diversity, shun the prejudice against race, religion and culture, and find deep inner peace in a dynamic atmosphere.”

Later in the festival, over 1,000 yoga practitioners joined together at the Yoga Park for a mass asana demonstration designed to illustrate the benefits of yoga for physical, mental and spiritual unity. Check out the video of musically-choreographed sun salutations below:

Many US political and religious leaders, including former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), also supported the event as either attendees or reception committee members. In a public statement, Pelosi said:

“The Foundation’s aims reflect the best of our world: empowering women, promoting human rights and preserving our planet.”

With med-mobs and vibration-raising yoga flash mobs popping up all over the world, we’re curious. Do you think these collective practices for peace make a difference in global politics? Can a whole bunch of people meditating together lead to world peace?
